VOICEOVER COSTS
Personally speaking, I tend to consider each project for its own merits. A discussion, by phone or email, for me, is essential to ascertain what’s involved and to arrive at the right cost for us both. I’d like to give you a bit of a guide through things though:
Corporate work
For corporate work, if you’re hiring me for an hour via isdn, you’ll pay a corporate hourly fee (between £250 and £275) and depending on where and how the piece is being used, there may be royalties to pay – again, grounds for discussion.
If I’m recording the project here – rather than over isdn – I may charge differently depending on what sort of project it is, where it’s being used, the length, whether I’m doing the edit/production etc. A quick conversation will sort out all the details and give you a price.
If you’ve a budget to work within, do share it. If I can help I certainly will, if I can’t, I’ll be honest and we’ll find something that works for us both. Remember when dealing with price, consider the impression you want to make with your project. The voiceover really is the icing on the cake so do look around to find the right voice, and be prepared to pay professional rates. It’ll be worth it, I promise.
TV
For TV Commercials, I am often represented by my lovely agents www.excellenttalent.com
If you come to me direct, I generally follow the guidelines set by www.usefee.tv as they have worked hard and smart to put together a formula to give you the correct cost. For this, we need TVRs (television ratings) so when presenting me with a commercial to price up, do aim to find out this figure if at all possible. You may be working within a budget in which case, do share it. If I can accommodate, I will. Even when clients come to me direct, I may still opt to ask my agent for help – as they’re very good at these things.
For TV documentaries, I will either charge you an hourly rate and apply usage royalties or we will arrange a buyout figure to enable you to broadcast your documentary where you want and when you want. For these projects, once again a conversation is warranted.
Radio
For radio commercials, I often work within the Equity guidelines, certainly for regular radio producers, but there are many occasions – particularly when advertising agencies are concerned – where the project will involve my agent and a session fee. Best thing to do is get in touch to discuss the project and we’ll arrive at the right solution together.
Online
For online commercials, there will be a session fee (£250 – £275) plus usage depending on where the advert is being used. The fee may be a session fee plus a yearly usage i.e. a percentage on top (e.g. 300-500% of the session fee) Things to consider are how many websites/social media platforms will the advert be shown on and for how long.
For online films which are purely informational, the fee will be lower and will generally be the cost of the film (dependent on how long it is and what work is involved) plus a lower usage figure – again dependent on where the film is being shown.
IVR/On hold (recorded telephone announcements)
These are charge per word and then revert to an hourly fee when this becomes more cost effective for you. Again, there are criteria involved so a discussion is needed to ascertain how many sites are in question and what exact services are required.
Talking books need to be discussed and will be dependent on a number of factors, including whether character reads, sound effects and music are needed, also where I’m recording, sales figures etc.
In store announcements/commercials will be a session fee plus Equity usage on top
Promos – to be discussed
Demos
When working for radio stations under Equity’s guiding hand, commercials demos are generally chargeable. If there are budget issues, let me know.
If you have a different type of project you’re pitching for, I’m more than happy to supply a demo to help you present something special and professional to your client. Just give me a call and we can talk fees and budgets.
Payment
My finance manager produces invoices at the end of each month – however if you need your invoice as soon as our project is finished, that’s absolutely fine, just let me know.
If I haven’t worked with someone before, on occasion I may ask for payment upfront – although I run my business on trust, so if I can avoid that I will.
Preferred methods of payment are BACS, PayPal (5% fees apply) or cheque. If you are paying by BACs from an overseas account, a small fee of £6 will be applied to the invoice.
Excellent Talent Ltd
If you contact my agent, please do let them know you found me through my website – it affects things their end. Whichever route you choose, the prices will be the same or very similar, so do rest assured you’ll be in safe hands either way.
